Mindful Movement and Meditation with Chi Kung
with Richard Hochsprung
What is the purpose of this class? To provide a place to practice and learn an ancient self-healing exercise program for body, mind and spirit. Open to all levels of experience and physical abilities.
What is Chi Kung. Chi has been defined as bioelectricity, life force, vitality or simply energy. Kung means exercise. These practices differ from many other forms of exercise in that their focus is on the internal structure, allowing the body to move a whole unit. They help to remove blockages in the energy pathways of the body. They increase energy, rather than dissipate energy like most traditional forms of vigorous exercise, and are based on a fusion of exertion and relaxation. Finding a balance between action and relaxation is the key to energy flow.
Chi Kung postures, exercises and meditations are the basis of Tai Chi, known for its flowing graceful movements, done for generations in China and brought here to the West. They were first developed as martial arts training for hand to hand combat. In the 1900’s it has made a slow transition from deadly art of war to becoming a health and longevity practice. It is part of Taoism, China's oldest system of philosophy based on a natural harmonious way of living. It is about observing, opening to and learning about ourselves and our nature in all its aspects. More and more, research is telling us that our bodies, including all our organs and glands, have innate healing capacities. These practices help us listen and become aware of what our bodies need to maintain health and also to heal past traumas. We can use that awareness to lead our intention to let go of stress and strain patterns within the entire physical and subtle body for improved range of motion, ease of movement and well-being.
